All visitors to Nauru (except citizens and residents) require a valid visa to enter the country. Nauru's visa system is straightforward but requires advance planning — it is not possible to obtain a visa on arrival. This guide covers the visa process, application requirements, and important practical information. Please note: visa requirements can change. Always verify current information with Nauru Immigration or nauru.gov.nr before travelling.
Who Needs a Visa?
All foreign nationals, including those transiting through Nauru International Airport, must obtain a visa before travelling. There are no visa-waiver agreements with any country. This applies regardless of the purpose of visit — tourism, business, official government business, or media work.
Nauru citizens and holders of valid Nauruan residence permits are exempt from visa requirements.
How to Apply
Visa applications must be submitted to Nauru Immigration via email. The process requires:
1. Contact the Acting Director of Immigration at least 4–6 weeks before your intended travel date 2. Send an email with your full name, passport details, travel dates, and purpose of visit 3. Receive a visa application form (PDF) 4. Complete the form and return it with supporting documents 5. Wait for processing — typical timelines vary from 2–6 weeks 6. Upon approval, you will receive a visa grant letter to present at check-in and on arrival
Note: There is no online visa portal or eVisa system. All applications are processed manually via email.

Visa Types & Duration

- Tourist Visa — typically valid for up to 30 days - Business Visa — valid for up to 30 days, may be extended - Official/Government Visa — for persons on official government business - Transit Visa — for passengers transiting through Nauru (rare, as most transits are of short duration) - Media/Journalist Visa — for visiting media personnel; requires additional approval
Visa extensions may be requested from the Department of Immigration in Yaren.
Arrival & Departure
Flights arrive at Nauru International Airport (INU), located approximately 2 kilometres from Yaren, the administrative centre. On arrival, you will go through immigration control where officers will check your passport and visa grant letter.
All arriving and departing passengers must complete a customs declaration form. Nauru has strict biosecurity regulations — do not bring fresh food, plants, soil, or animal products without prior declaration.
Departure tax is included in your airfare for most airlines — check with your carrier to confirm.
Important Notes
- Visa requirements can change with short notice. Always check current requirements with Nauru Immigration or your nearest Nauruan diplomatic mission before booking. - Overstaying your visa is a serious offence and may result in fines, detention, and deportation. - Nauru does not have embassies in most countries — visa inquiries are handled via email by the Department of Immigration in Yaren. - For media visits, contact the Government Information Office (GIO) separately for accreditation.
